February 4, 2006 METRO bus driver involved in fatal accident fired

(2/04/06 - HOUSTON) - A Metropolitan Transit Authority bus driver who was at the wheel when a pedestrian was fatally struck has been fired, a Metro spokeswoman said.

Romain Alexandre, 56, was fired Friday for "unsafe and careless action and disregard for established safety procedures" in the fatal accident, said Metro spokeswoman Raequel Roberts. Witnesses said his bus struck Domitila Leon, 43, in the crosswalk on Jan. 20, dragging her about 20 feet and running over her. Alexandre, who had only minor infractions on his record since being hired in 1993, was cited for failure to yield right-of-way to a pedestrian.
